Short answer
Yes. Modern large language models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — understand and write Latvian well, including diacritics and grammatical cases. For important texts it is still worth checking terminology and style, because there is less training data in Latvian than in English.
How well AI writes Latvian
Large language models are trained on texts in many languages, so they understand Latvian well: they answer questions, write e-mails, create summaries and translate. Mistakes are more common in:
- industry terminology and literal translations from English;
- less common word forms;
- style — the text may sound “translated”.
How to get better results
- Write the task in Latvian and specify the style (“businesslike”, “friendly”, “use the formal Jūs”).
- Give an example of how your company writes.
- List the terms to use.
In company solutions
If AI works with customers in Latvian — for example, answering requests — the solution includes instructions on language and terminology, and the results are tested on real examples. That’s one of the steps when we build AI solutions for Latvian companies.
