What is an intranet?

Short answer

An intranet is a company's internal network that works much like the internet but is available only to employees. It keeps the documents, news, tools and applications needed for everyday work in one place.

An intranet is a system used inside a company or organisation. It works much like the internet but is available only to internal users, such as employees. The purpose of an intranet is to give secure access to the information, documents, tools and applications the company needs for its daily work.

Intranets are often used to share company news, policies and project plans, and to support collaboration with shared calendars, discussion forums and other resources.

Main benefits

  • More effective communication. A single platform where employees quickly get in touch and share news and information.
  • Centralised information. Documents, procedures, guidelines and news are in one place — no need to search several systems or ask colleagues.
  • Higher productivity. Employees easily reach the tools they need, and automated workflows save time.
  • Better collaboration. Shared calendars, file sharing, discussions and project management tools — especially useful for remote teams.
  • Secure access to data. An intranet is a closed network, so the company controls who can access the information.
  • Employee engagement. A platform for sharing ideas, joining discussions and staying informed about company events.
  • Lower costs. Less paper, printing and physical archiving, because processes happen digitally.
  • Easy access to training. E-learning and development resources are available at any time.

How we do it

White Digital has built and introduced several intranets, for example for Latvijas Autoceļu uzturētājs (the Latvian road maintenance company). An intranet can be built as part of a wider company system, connected to the programs you already use.
