What is a domain and how to choose one?

Short answer

A domain is a website’s address on the internet, for example company.lv. It is registered for a set period and has to be renewed regularly. Choose a short domain that is easy to say and spell and relates to your company name; for the Latvian market .lv is usually used, for international ones .com or .eu.

How a domain works

A domain is a human-readable name that points to the server where the website lives. It’s registered through a registrar and paid for regularly — usually once a year.

How to choose

  • Short and simple — easy to say on the phone and to type.
  • No complications — avoid hyphens, digits and unusual spelling.
  • Matches the brand — the company name is better than a long string of keywords.
  • Ending — .lv for Latvia, .eu or .com internationally.
  • Backup domains — if needed, also register similar variants or other endings.

Important

  • The domain must be registered to the company, not to the developer or an employee.
  • Turn on automatic renewal so you don’t lose the domain.
  • An e-mail address on your domain (name@company.lv) looks more professional than a free e-mail address.

A domain and hosting are two different things — see what is hosting.
